Window and Door Installation in Acton, Halton Hills
GTS Windows & Doors is a Kitchener window and door company that has been fitting, replacing and repairing windows and doors since 1986, and Acton marks the eastern edge of the area we serve. The drive from our Bridge Street East shop runs through Guelph and Rockwood on Highway 7, so we plan Acton work carefully rather than squeezing it between other calls.
Acton differs from our other service towns in one important way: it sits in Halton Region, not Wellington County or Waterloo Region. Since 1974 it has been part of the Town of Halton Hills, so permits, heritage approvals and inspections go through Halton Hills staff in Georgetown rather than a nearby township office.

Acton and Surrounding Rural Halton Hills
Downtown Acton grew along Mill Street after the Grand Trunk Railway arrived in 1856, and the town centre still sits where Highway 7 crosses Regional Road 25. Fairy Lake, the old mill pond on Black Creek, wraps around Prospect Park, where the Acton Fall Fair runs each September.
Housing shifts street by street here, from Victorian brick near the core to post-war bungalows and newer subdivisions. Outside town, rural Halton Hills adds farm properties and hamlet homes with their own exposure and access challenges.

Victorian Homes From the Leathertown Era
Tanning shaped Acton from 1842 until the Beardmore tannery closed in 1986, and at its peak the Beardmore operation was described as the largest tanner in Canada. That industry built much of the town's red and buff brick housing, from workers' semis to villas like Sunderland Villa at Mill Street East and John Street, designated as a heritage property in 2024.
Windows in these houses are usually tall, narrow openings under brick arches, often holding original wood sash or tired aluminum storms added decades later. The challenge is keeping the proportions, because a bulky replacement frame that shrinks the glass can make a Victorian facade look wrong from the street.
Insert or Full Frame
Where the original frame is sound, an insert keeps interior plaster and trim intact. Where the frame is rotted or badly out of square, full-frame window replacement is the longer-lasting fix.
Arched Brick Heads
Many Leathertown-era openings have a segmental brick arch above the window. We measure the curve directly and order a matching shape instead of filling the arch with a flat panel.
Front Doors and Transoms
Older downtown homes often have a transom or sidelights around the front door. A new front entry door can keep that layout while swapping single-pane glass for insulated units.
Commuter Homes Near the Acton GO Station
Acton GO, on Eastern Avenue beside the former Old Hide House, connects the town to Toronto on the Kitchener line. That rail link is a big part of Acton's appeal for commuters, and it also means homes close to the tracks live with train horns and rail noise.
For bedrooms facing the rail line or Highway 7, noise-reduction windows with laminated glass and unequal pane thicknesses take the edge off the loudest sounds. In newer homes, original builder-grade sliding patio doors are another common replacement as their rollers and seals wear out.

Halton Hills Permits and Heritage
Acton's building permits are handled by Town of Halton Hills Building Services at Town Hall, 1 Halton Hills Drive, not by a Wellington County or Waterloo Region office. As a general Ontario Building Code rule, fitting a window or door into the same opening with no structural change does not need a permit, while new or enlarged openings do.
Heritage adds another layer. Acton is home to the Town's Syndicate Housing Heritage Conservation District: ten brick semi-detached houses on the north side of Bower Street, between Elgin and Frederick streets, built in 1882 for tannery workers.
In that district, and on individually designated properties, character features such as window openings, brick voussoirs and bay windows are protected. Exterior changes need heritage approval from the Town before work starts, so talk to Halton Hills heritage planning staff early and we can supply product drawings and specifications for the application.

Do you travel to Acton for smaller repairs?
Yes, although small repairs are usually booked on days when we already have work in Acton or Rockwood, which can mean a slightly longer wait. Send photos of the problem when you call and we will tell you the likely timing before anything is booked.
Does Halton Hills require a permit to replace windows?
A same-size replacement that does not touch structural framing generally does not need a building permit under the Ontario Building Code. Enlarging an opening, adding a new one or changing a header does, and designated properties or homes in the Bower Street heritage district may also need heritage approval. Halton Hills Building Services can confirm the rules for your address.
Can you install on evenings or Saturdays?
Our office hours run Monday to Saturday from 7:00am to 9:00pm and Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Measures and consultations fit easily into an evening, and Saturday installs can often be arranged for homeowners who commute during the week.
