Founded in 1847 as Schmidtsville on the Nith River, the village grew around its mill pond and a grain mill that has stood since 1856. Houses along Queen's Bush Road range from 1800s brick to postwar bungalows, with newer builds on the edges of the village.

St. Clements is home to the township office on Lobsinger Line and is the closest Wellesley community to our Kitchener shop. Homes here are mostly detached houses on village lots, with farmland starting right at the edge of the settlement.
Linwood sits in the township's north end, near the Wellington County line. Its older homes and surrounding farms see the full force of open-country weather, so draft control is usually the first thing owners ask about.
Hawkesville lies on the Conestogo River near the Woolwich line, and Heidelberg is split between Wellesley and Woolwich along Lobsinger Line. Crosshill, where council meets, and Bamberg round out the smaller hamlets we cover.

Wellesley village and St. Clements have plenty of homes built between the late 1800s and the 1970s. Typical problems are original wood sashes with crumbling glazing putty, aluminum storms over single pane glass and 1970s sliders with worn tracks.
For most of these houses, vinyl windows in a colour that suits the brick or siding are the most cost-effective upgrade. The township has a handful of designated heritage buildings, such as the Queen's Tavern on Queen's Bush Road, and exterior changes on those should be discussed with the township first.
Much of Wellesley is open, gently rolling cropland with few windbreaks, so winter wind hits houses harder here than in town. That pressure pushes cold air through worn seals and makes single pane glass feel like an open window.
Casement and awning windows clamp shut against their seals, so they resist wind better than sliders do. On the windward side of the house, triple pane windows keep the inner glass warmer and cut down on frost and condensation.
If the frames are still sound, fresh window weatherstripping is a lower-cost way to stop drafts for a few more winters.
Building permits are handled through the Township of Wellesley office at 4639 Lobsinger Line in St. Clements, and you can apply and book inspections online through Cloudpermit. Replacing a window or door within the existing opening, where no structural members change, does not need a permit.
A permit is required to make a new opening or change the size of one. On rural lots, adding a bedroom also triggers a septic system review, which matters if a new basement bedroom needs an egress window.
The Ontario Building Code requires a bedroom window in a home without sprinklers to open to at least 0.35 square metres, with no dimension under 380 mm. We check that at the measure so the window you order works for the room.
