From Galt stone to Hespeler subdivisions
GTS Windows & Doors installs, replaces and repairs windows and doors throughout Cambridge, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from our shop on Bridge Street East in Kitchener. We have been doing this work across Waterloo Region since 1986, long enough to know that Cambridge is really three old towns and a village that the Province joined together in 1973: Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair.
Each part of the city has its own kind of building. Galt's core was built by Scottish stonemasons from fieldstone and local limestone, Preston and Hespeler grew up as mill towns on the Grand and Speed rivers, and the land between them filled with postwar streets and modern subdivisions. A window that suits a new Hespeler townhouse is rarely the right answer for a 19th-century stone cottage in West Galt, and we quote each one accordingly.

The largest section of the city takes in downtown along Main and Water Streets, Dickson Hill, and the older streets of East Galt and West Galt. Farther out, subdivisions such as Saginaw and Fiddlesticks add thousands of homes built from the 1990s onward.
Preston grew along King Street near the meeting of the Speed and Grand rivers. Its streets are lined with modest brick homes and postwar bungalows, with Preston Heights adding more of the same to the north.
Hespeler Village grew around Jacob Hespeler's mills on the Speed River and still has a compact core of older homes on and around Queen Street. Newer subdivisions stretch toward Highway 401 and make up most of our Hespeler requests.
Blair is a small historic village on the Grand River, protected by its own heritage conservation district since 2002. Work on older Blair homes usually starts with a conversation about what the district plan allows.
Galt has some of the finest Scottish-style stonework in Ontario, from small cottages of uncoursed fieldstone to grand limestone and granite buildings such as McDougall Cottage, built in 1858. Stone walls like these are often more than a foot thick, and no two openings are quite the same size.
Replacing windows in these houses means measuring every opening on its own, checking it for square and planning how the new unit will sit in the reveal. We order custom windows sized to the existing masonry, set them without cutting the stone, then finish the inside with extension jambs and the outside with a sealant suited to masonry.
Where the house calls for a period look, traditional wood windows with narrow sightlines keep the proportions right, and clad versions reduce painting. Original stone sills and lintels stay in place and are cleaned and sealed rather than covered over.
Preston's postwar bungalows and many Galt homes from the 1950s and 1960s still have small wood or early aluminum windows. These are good candidates for full-frame replacement, and some owners take the chance to enlarge a basement window into a proper bedroom egress window, which needs a City building permit.
The subdivisions built from the 1990s on in Hespeler, Saginaw and Fiddlesticks bring a different set of problems. We see fogged sealed units, patio doors that drag on worn rollers and caulking that has shrunk away from the brick. When replacement is the better choice, our window installation process includes fresh insulation, flashing and sealing around every frame.
Cambridge homes get electricity from GrandBridge Energy and natural gas from Enbridge Gas. Gas-heated homes on Enbridge can apply to the Home Renovation Savings program when upgrading to ENERGY STAR windows, and our window rebate guide covers the current rules.
Cambridge is one of the region's biggest manufacturing centres, with industrial parks along Highway 401, Hespeler Road, Franklin Boulevard and the Boxwood area. Those buildings go through doors quickly: forklift traffic, loading dock wind and constant use wear out hinges, closers and frames.

Cambridge has three heritage conservation districts. The Main Street district, introduced in 1984, covers the downtown Galt block bounded by Main Street, Ainslie Street, Imperial Lane and Water Street, while Blair Village was designated in 2002 and the Dickson Hill district, from 2005, deals mainly with city-owned public spaces.
The City has also been preparing a larger Galt Core heritage conservation district, with a proposed boundary of about 146 parcels east of the Grand River. If your property is in or near downtown Galt, check whether that district is now in force before planning exterior changes.

From Bridge Street East we reach Cambridge by Highway 8 and the 401, or along King Street through Freeport into Preston. Preston is about 20 minutes away, Hespeler and Blair about 25, and downtown Galt about 30 outside rush hour.
Custom sizes for stone openings take longer to manufacture than stock units, so we measure first and give you a realistic install window at the quote. Spring and early fall are the busiest seasons, and booking a measure several weeks ahead gives you the best choice of dates.

Yes. We measure each masonry opening separately, order windows made to fit, and set them in the existing reveal without cutting or widening the stone. The gap is insulated with low-expansion foam, the interior is finished with extension jambs, and the exterior is sealed with a product suited to masonry. Widening a stone opening needs a building permit and, on a heritage property, heritage approval as well.
Yes. We install and replace hollow metal doors and frames, including closers, panic hardware and weather sealing, for plants, warehouses and multi-unit industrial buildings. Doors that are dented but still structurally sound can often be repaired and rehung instead of replaced.
For stock-size replacement windows, booking a measure a few weeks ahead is usually enough. Custom sizes, wood-clad units and heritage properties need more time, so allow several extra weeks for manufacturing and any approvals. Spring and early fall fill up first, and winter installs are possible because we replace one opening at a time.
