Better vinyl, installed right since 1986
GTS Windows & Doors has installed replacement and new-construction windows across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph since 1986, and vinyl is the frame material we fit most often. We are a licensed, insured and WSIB-covered installer based on Bridge Street East in Kitchener, and a member of SAWDAC. Homeowners, landlords, property managers and builders call us when they want vinyl windows that still seal and open smoothly decades from now.
Almost every window company in Waterloo Region sells vinyl, so the word on a quote tells you very little on its own. Two vinyl casements can look identical in a showroom and behave very differently after ten winters of freeze-thaw cycles, summer sun and daily cranking. The difference comes down to the profile, the reinforcement, the glass package and, just as often, how carefully the frame was set in the opening.
This page explains those differences in plain terms so you can compare quotes with confidence, from 1960s bungalows needing a full set to a single cracked basement slider. It also shows typical 2026 installed prices and walks through how we install vinyl so the frames stay square and the sashes keep sealing. Every job uses ENERGY STAR rated products and is backed by our 20-year parts and labour warranty.
Vinyl, or PVC, is one of four frame materials in our window installation lineup, and it is the one most Ontario homeowners choose. Three practical reasons explain why.
A vinyl window typically costs less than a fibreglass, aluminum or wood window of the same size and style. On a whole-house job, that saving can pay for better glass or a new entry door.
Vinyl never needs scraping or repainting. Upkeep is limited to washing the frames, vacuuming the tracks and checking the weep holes and seals each spring.
PVC is a poor conductor of heat, so the room-side frame stays warm when it is well below zero outside. Paired with Low-E glass and argon, vinyl units routinely meet the ENERGY STAR Canada limit of a 1.22 W/m²·K U-factor.
Price gaps between vinyl windows come from parts you cannot see once the window is in the wall. These are the details we check when choosing a product line, and you can ask any installer to show them to you.
A vinyl frame is an extrusion divided into hollow chambers that slow heat flow and stiffen the profile. Better frames use more chambers and thicker exterior walls, so they resist twisting when a sash is locked against its weatherstripping. Ask for a cross-section sample, because a thin-walled frame feels flimsy even in your hand.
Quality sashes and frames are fusion welded, which turns each corner into one continuous piece of PVC with no joint to leak. Tall casements, wide sliders, meeting rails and patio doors also need steel or aluminum reinforcement inside the chambers. Without it, large sashes sag and stop latching evenly within a few seasons.
Some manufacturers inject or insert insulating foam into the frame chambers. The foam stops air from circulating inside the hollow profile and warms the interior frame surface slightly, which helps against condensation at the sill. It is a worthwhile upgrade, but glass still does most of the work, so foam should never replace a good glass package.
White and almond are through-colour vinyl, meaning the colour runs right through the PVC and never needs refinishing. For black, bronze, grey or woodgrain looks, the manufacturer adds a finish over the vinyl.
Dark colours absorb far more sun, and vinyl softens as it heats. Reputable manufacturers use heat-reflective pigments, add reinforcement to dark units and set maximum sizes for dark exteriors, which we check before quoting large windows on south and west walls.
A popular and durable combination is a white interior with a coloured exterior. It keeps rooms bright and matches existing interior trim.
| Finish | How it is made | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| White or almond | Colour runs through the PVC | Lowest cost, no refinishing, scratches barely show |
| Laminated film | Colour or woodgrain film bonded to the frame | Convincing woodgrain looks, needs careful handling during install |
| Co-extruded cap | Acrylic or ASA layer fused to the vinyl during extrusion | Strong fade resistance, common on dark exteriors |
| Factory paint | Coating sprayed and cured at the plant | Broad colour range, covered by the manufacturer's finish warranty |
Vinyl wins on price and suits most standard-size casements, sliders and hung windows in the region's subdivisions. Fibreglass windows cost more, but the frame expands at nearly the same rate as glass, which keeps seals tight on very large units and dark exteriors.
If your plans include oversized picture windows, black frames on a sunny wall or heavy triple pane glass in wide sashes, fibreglass deserves a look. For everything else, a well-built vinyl window is usually the better value.
| Factor | Vinyl | Fibreglass |
|---|---|---|
| Typical installed price, medium casement | $900 to $1,400 | $1,300 to $2,300 |
| Movement with temperature | Several times more than glass | Close to glass |
| Dark exterior colours | Possible, with reflective finishes and size limits | Well suited |
| Frame width | Wider for the same strength | Slimmer sightlines |
| Refinishing later | Not recommended | Can be repainted |
| Typical lifespan | 20 to 30+ years | 30 to 40+ years |
We quote ENERGY STAR rated vinyl lines, and your quote names the manufacturer, product line and model for every opening. That lets you look each window up on NRCan's ENERGY STAR list and compare quotes like for like.
Whatever the brand on the label, the parts inside matter. These are examples of widely used components found in quality vinyl windows sold in Ontario.

These are typical 2026 installed prices in Waterloo Region for white vinyl with double pane Low-E glass and argon. They include removal, disposal, a retrofit installation, insulation, interior trim and exterior caulking or capping.
Replacing several openings in one visit lowers the price per window, because measuring, delivery and setup are shared. Our window and door cost guide for Kitchener shows whole-house budgets and every factor that moves a quote.
ENERGY STAR vinyl windows can also count toward Ontario's $100 per opening Home Renovation Savings rebate when your home and project meet the program rules. Check the heating and gas-supplier conditions before you plan around it.

Most of the vinyl we fit goes into existing openings as replacement windows, where the old frame hides problems until it comes out. Vinyl moves more with temperature than any other frame material, so a five-foot frame can change length by several millimetres between a January night and a July afternoon. These steps keep that movement from turning into sticking sashes and bowed jambs.
We remove the old unit, clear out debris and soft wood, and install a sloped sill pan or membrane. Any water that gets past the exterior seal then drains out instead of into the wall.
The frame needs a perimeter gap, commonly about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch per side depending on the manufacturer's instructions. Jamming vinyl tight against the rough opening is one of the most common reasons windows bind in summer.
Shims go under the corners and mullions and directly behind every jamb screw, so each fastener pulls against solid support. We check level, plumb and both diagonals before anything is fastened.
Screws are snugged, not cranked, because overdriving a screw into an unshimmed jamb bows the frame inward and the sash stops sealing. On large units we follow the manufacturer's screw spacing exactly.
Low-expansion window and door foam fills the gap without pushing the jambs, and it ties into the home's air barrier. Outside, we finish with flashing, backer rod and quality sealant, or aluminum capping over old wood brickmould.
A well-made vinyl window that was installed properly typically lasts 20 to 30 years or more in Waterloo Region's climate. Sealed glass units, operators and balances often need attention before the frame does. Those parts can usually be replaced through vinyl window repair without replacing the whole window.
Factory-applied finishes are the reliable way to get colour on vinyl, and they carry the manufacturer's warranty. Field painting is possible with vinyl-safe paints in lighter shades, but dark paint on white vinyl can overheat and distort the frame. Many manufacturers void the frame warranty if vinyl is painted after installation, so check before you pick up a brush.
They can if the vinyl formulation or the installation is wrong. Quality dark vinyl uses heat-reflective pigments or a capstock layer, reinforcement in larger sashes and size limits set by the manufacturer. Correct expansion gaps and careful screw placement at install matter just as much.
Yes, with the right glass package. Choose Low-E glass with argon and warm-edge spacers at minimum, and consider triple pane windows for bedrooms, north walls and rooms that feel cold. PVC insulates well, so the frame is rarely the weak point in a quality vinyl window.
