GTS Windows & Doors has been installing and repairing windows and doors since 1986, and we make the trip north from Kitchener to Elora for everything from a single door swap to a whole-house window package. Few towns in our service area have as many 1800s limestone buildings, and that shapes how we measure, order and install here. Elora's Stone Heritage
Elora was founded in 1832, and during the 1860s limestone buildings cut from the riverbanks came to line both sides of Mill Street. The Elora Mill, rebuilt in stone after an 1859 fire and now a hotel, is the best-known example, but stone houses fill the streets around Metcalfe Street and Victoria Crescent too.
Walls in these buildings are commonly 18 inches or more thick, and openings are often arched or slightly out of plumb. Stock windows rarely fit, so we order custom windows sized to each opening and set them so the deep stone reveal still reads from the street.
Where the look matters most, wood windows or wood-clad units with narrow muntins and a true sash profile pass for original from the sidewalk. Vinyl can still make sense on rear walls and newer additions.
Heritage Approvals in Centre Wellington
Centre Wellington keeps a Municipal Heritage Register of properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, plus others with potential heritage value, and it can be searched on the township's online map. A heritage permit may be required for alterations that affect a designated property's heritage attributes, and original windows and doors are often among them.
Heritage Centre Wellington, a volunteer committee that advises council, weighs in on heritage matters. The township also runs a Community Heritage Grant Program that may help with restoration costs on eligible properties.
Before we order anything for a stone building, we check the register with you and supply profiles and product details for any permit application. Separately, the Building Division at 1 MacDonald Square in Elora needs a building permit when an opening is widened, but not for replacements within the existing opening where no structural members change.
Newer Homes Around Elora and Fergus
Outside the stone core, the south side of Elora and the edges of Fergus have filled with new detached homes and townhouses, including developments along South River Road. Most came with builder-grade vinyl casements and sliding patio doors.
Common complaints in these homes are drafty patio doors, crank operators that wear out early and hot west-facing rooms. Our window installation service fixes that with better glass, sturdier hardware and a properly sealed rough opening.
Fergus, a little further up the Grand, has its own 1800s limestone downtown, so we bring the same stone-wall approach to older buildings there.
Storefronts, Inns and Short-Term Rentals
Downtown Elora draws crowds to its shops, restaurants and festivals, and many visitors stay in inns, bed and breakfasts or short-term rentals near the Gorge and the Elora Quarry. Those buildings need windows that lock reliably, open safely and keep street noise out of guest rooms.

How do you replace windows in thick stone walls?
We remove the old unit without disturbing the stone, check the sill and lintel, and set the new frame on shims in the opening. The gap is sealed with low-expansion foam and exterior sealant, and extension jambs finish the deep interior reveal.

Yes. Fergus, Salem, Ennotville and Inverhaugh are all within our 45-minute range from Kitchener. For farther corners of the township, such as Belwood, ask when you book and we will confirm scheduling.
